SPECIAL TALK: The Journey of 40 Years Collecting Photographs with Peter Fetterman and the Power of Photography

The Gallery at Leica Store San Francisco is thrilled to welcome Peter Fetterman, founder of the renowned Peter Fetterman Gallery and a celebrated photography collector, for an engaging talk about his journey in collecting photographs.

Hailing from London, Peter Fetterman has been a prominent figure in photography for over four decades. His passion for the medium began as a filmmaker and collector, culminating in the establishment of his first gallery in 1988. In 1994, he became a trailblazing tenant of Bergamot Station, the Santa Monica arts hub, where his gallery remains a cornerstone.

The Peter Fetterman Gallery houses one of the most extensive collections of classic 20th-century photography in the United States, with a focus on humanist photography. Its remarkable inventory features iconic works by masters such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado, Steve McCurry, Ansel Adams, Willy Ronis, André Kertész, Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Lillian Bassman, Pentti Sammallahti, Sarah Moon, and Jeffrey Conley.

Peter and his team are dedicated to fostering a deep appreciation for photography in an inviting, salon-style setting. Their commitment to the medium celebrates its power to connect people through universal emotions and shared humanity.

In 2022, Peter Fetterman released a groundbreaking book, The Power of Photography, that brings together 120 photographs from his personal collection. This extraordinary compilation tells the story of 20th-century photography, offering readers a rare glimpse into some of the most iconic and uplifting images of the era. Hailed as an essential reference, the book underscores the profound ability of photography to transcend cultural and linguistic barriers, sparking emotion and understanding across the globe.

Paul Cupido is a contemporary Dutch photographer whose work delves into themes of transience and the ephemeral nature of existence. His ethereal compositions often blur the lines between reality and memory, inviting viewers into a contemplative space that reflects on the beauty and impermanence of life.

Cig Harvey is a British-born artist and photographer known for her vivid, poetic imagery that explores the sensory and symbolic aspects of human experience. Her work often intertwines human presence with richly textured natural landscapes, creating narratives that are both intimate and otherworldly.

Jeffrey Conley is an American photographer celebrated for his black-and-white landscapes that capture the serene and timeless rhythms of nature. With a keen mastery of light and shadow, Conley’s meditative images transform ordinary moments into reflections of the earth’s enduring beauty.

Pentti Sammallahti is a Finnish photographer renowned for his monochromatic works that capture the harmony and subtle humor of life in the natural world. His storytelling reveals fleeting moments of connection between humans, animals, and their environments, emphasizing the unity of all living beings.
